SFD submits report on Electoral Reform to UN Universal Periodic Review

Singaporeans For Democracy has submitted its report on electoral reform to the UN Universal Periodic Review today.

In its submission SFD stated that the root cause of human rights abuses in Singapore lie in the electoral system design that has returned the ruling People’s Action Party to power for nearly half a century. Hence, electoral reform is fundamental to ensure effective promotion and protection of human rights in Singapore. Read more »

SFD Report to UN: Independent Election Commission needed

The need for an independent election commission and abolishing the GRC are the key recommendations that came out of SFD's first Election Consultation forum on 2 October (Saturday). Hence, this will be the focus of the SFD report to the UPR process in 2011.

Several supplementary recommendations to be included in the SFD report were also brought up during the forum.

One recommendation in the report will be the idea of a vote of no-confidence whereby voters in an uncontested GRC can have the right to cast a no-confidence vote against a walkover team. Another recommendation is the mandatory disclosure of MP health reports so as to allow voters to keep themselves in the loop of their representative's physical ability to carry out their duties. Presently, the United Nations is accepting reports from civil society groups to assist it in assessing the Singapore government’s human rights record. This assessment is done through the United Nations mechanism the Universal Periodic Review. Singapore’s human rights record will come under the United Nation’s review in 2011. Read more »
